- Avoid technical jargon
- Be succinct: know when to stop talking
- Anticipate likely questions
- Ask policymaker to clarify the question
- Disarm loaded questions: Don’t be defensive
- Align your answer with your main message
- Get back later if you can’t answer question on the spot
